“Ko toku reo toku ohooho, ko toku reo toku mapihi maurea.

My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul.”

Te Whanau Rumaki provides opportunities for tamariki to strengthen their connections to Te Ao Maori through the medium of Te Reo Maori underpinned by Ngati Whakaue/Te Arawa tikanga and kawa. We believe that by highlighting and strengthening these elements we create a learning environment that embodies the whakatauki, above “Ko toku reo toku ohooho, ko toku reo toku mapihi maurea.”

Graduates of Te Whanau Rumaki are culturally empowered, competent, confident learners, effective communicators in the Māori world, healthy in mind, body and soul and secure in their identity, and sense of belonging. They will have the skills and knowledge to participate in and contribute to Māori society and the wider world. For this to be achieved, it is essential that students are able to communicate and have knowledge of Te Reo Maori or have had at least two years of Rumaki education.
