THE PATHWAY BEFORE US

Kaitao Middle School operates on a holistic home-room system for educating our students. This provides a close, trusting relationship with adults and peers, creating a climate for personal growth and intellectual development. Under the academies structure all students are developing through their preferred or main intelligence.

Here, also, is a focus on educating the whole child emotionally, intellectually, socially and personally. There is also an emphasis on students learning to think critically, through mastery of an appropriate body of knowledge, leading a healthy life, behaving ethically and lawfully and exercising responsibility for their own learning and development.

At present, we have the teachers who can deliver in a wide range of curriculum areas and are capable of employing a range of teaching methods and strategies typical of Primary, rather than Secondary practices. Our teachers will be demanding, yet personable and caring, teachers who encourage student participation in planning and content, pace and direction of learning, combined with high levels of rewards and praise. Our teachers, who are committed to the Middle School philosophy, are the key factors in determining the educational effectiveness of classroom programmes for our students.

Our teachers will encourage students to help each other interact positively, and work together creating environments in which emerging adolescents develop more positive attitudes to learning and achieve significantly better at their school work. We will provide close adult supervision and caring adult support required for emerging adolescent students.

Teaching will be characterised by student-centred enquiry rather than dictative teaching. This will be designed to meet the unique needs of the Middle School individual and group, and utilising a wide variety of teaching techniques as effective one-to-one instruction.

Looking ahead, we are excited by the prospect of suggested planned development of our school over the next five years:

- A focus on landscaping
- Frontage upgrade (complete 2005)
- Hall upgrade
- A gymnasium
- Covering Astroturf
