Caring Community
|
Developing a sense of community, learning to be loyal, and to participate in team competitions a part of the character-building process which begins when students enter our school as a year 7. Belonging to an academy is an important aspect of the development of a sense of community and belonging we attempt to foster within our students. Our school motto Kia Puawai I Roto I Te Whanaungatanga is reflected in the daily life of the school.
Many opportunities are provided for students to become leaders or take responsible possitions within our school community.

Recognition of excellence in the areas of Academic, Cultral, Citizenship and Sport is provided with a system of 'Flashes' which are sewn to the arm of the sweatshirt and worn with pride. Students with 15 'Flashes' become members of the Achiever's Club, with 25 'Flashes' students become members of the Excellence Club and 30 or more 'Flashes' become members of the exclusive "Principals Club".
Values such as compassion, aroha, caring, respect, courtesy, kindness, honesty, and responsibility are taught in a variety of ways, with an ephasis placed on two or three values each term.

Students are encouraged to become involved in activities which help the wider community and, each year, the 40 Hour Famine is our one major outside charity fundraiser.
In 2007 Houses were reintroduced so every child belongs to another group of mixed students from across the school.

|
The Houses are Solomon, Reid, Cowley and Bosson We have been gold status as fundraisers for many years and in 2004 Kaitao was the top famine fundraiser of all intermediates in New Zealand and in 2006 won a silver award.
In 2007 we contributed to 12 different charity organisations as part of our value programme and Kaitao cares.
The Primary Enterprise Programme was successfully introduced in 2001 and will continue during 2008.
Opportunities for leadership abound and students are selected by their class to be a school councillor.
Students can also opt to be in the leadership academy and it is generally from the group of fine young students that head boy and head girl are selected.
