THE MIDDLE YEARS

Pedagogy

The pedagogy of the Middle Years is deliberately responsive to the needs of young people. There is a well documented research based around the critical needs of these students in academic, social, emotional, physical and psychological domains. We provide a learning environment and teacher strategies which engage students in a way that is appropriate for their particular stage of development by genuinely consulting and negotiating with students to establish relevant learning context, content and experiences using:

- Thinking skills
...- Inquiry skills
......- Challenging horizons
.........- Academic skills
............- Cultural skills
...............- Social skills
..................- Physical skills

Curriculum
Curriculum across the middle years is developmentally responsive and is located within the framework provided by the new curriculum essence statements and key competencies.

The Middle Years Curriculum is purposeful and meaningful for our students focusing on and related to the evolving interests and needs of the students.

Students are part of the teaching and learning process. Learning is personalized, students are taught how to learn and how to think for themselves in a critical way.

At Kaitao, we try to ensure that all children experience the excitement of learning and the joy of success. Over the next years, your child will be offered a wide range of Learning Areas and Essential Skills, and it will be up to each individual just how much they become involved.

We believe that it is our task to provide as many learning opportunities as we can for each student and encourage them to experience as many as they feel comfortable with. Our emphasis is on learning to learn so each student will need to be adaptable, resourceful and ready to live in a society that is changing rapidly.

We endeavour to develop a partnership between the home and school which recognises individual worth and builds esteem.
